Port of LA Container Volumes Increase 8.75% in June


The Port of Los Angeles has released its June 2012 cargo volumes.

Imports increased by 6 percent, from 333,894 Twenty-Foot Equivalent (TEU) containers in June 2011 to 353,930 TEUs this June. Exports increased 6.9 percent, from 163,137 TEUs in June 2011 to 174,418 TEUs in June 2012.

Combined, total loaded imports and exports for June increased 6.3 percent, from 497,031 TEUs last June to 528,348 TEUs in June 2012. Factoring in empties, which increased 17.2 percent year over year, overall June 2012 volumes (696,847 TEUs) increased 8.75 percent compared to June 2011 (640,794 TEUs).

For the first six months of 2012, overall container volumes have increased 6.45 percent (4,010,203 TEUs) compared to the same period in 2011 (3,767,227 TEUs).

The port of Piraeus will be equipped with five of the most modern cranes in the world, significantly upgrading the port's facilities and boosting its productivity, a Cosco representative said Friday.
