LNG carrier, Maran Gas Apollonia, became the first large LNG carrier to pass through the expanded locks of the new Panama Canal.

The Maran Gas-owned 161,870m³, 2014-built LNG carrier passed through the waterway’s new locks, en route from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and loaded with a US export cargo from Cheniere-owned Sabine Pass LNG.

The expanded Canal can accommodate 90% of the world’s LNG tankers, which is forecast to have a major impact on global LNG flows.
