Veniamis fires sulphur cap regulation warning

Immediate action is needed to fix flaws in the way the 0.5% bunker sulphur cap will be introduced next year, the president of the Greek Union of Shipowners, Theodore Veniamis, told a press conference in the framework of the Greek Shipping Summit this week.

Veniamis spoke in favor of the targets set by the IMO. However, he warned that the Organization’s regulation will cause “chaos” to shipping worldwide, as there are no guarantees that the new type of fuel will suffice in terms of production. Moreover, Mr Veniamis reiterated the Greek Union of Shipowners’ view that scrubbers are not the solution.
