Greek shipping supports the proposal put forward by Liberia and Panama for the green transition of shipping under the International Maritime Organization (IMO), while maintaining that the alternative proposal known as the “Net-Zero Framework” does not provide the solution.
In a statement, Melina Travlos, president of the Union of Greek Shipowners, said the negotiations so far have highlighted significant weaknesses in the proposed IMO Net-Zero Framework, which, she stressed, “clearly does not provide the solution.”
“It is critical that the voice of the shipping industry, which will be called upon to implement the measures, is meaningfully taken into account. The green transition of shipping cannot be achieved without the shipping industry,” Travlos said.
She described the approach outlined in the Panama-Liberia proposal, which she said could be further improved, as a balanced and realistic basis for continuing the international dialogue.
The proposal incorporates critical parameters, including the availability and affordability of the fuels required for shipping’s transition. The importance of these factors in determining the sector’s decarbonization pathway is also supported by Japan’s proposal, she added.
Travlos also called on IMO member states to listen closely to the industry’s concerns in order to develop a global solution that secures the necessary international consensus while combining environmental effectiveness, economic viability and social justice.
“The goal is one: meaningful decarbonization,” she said. “Progress is not measured by what is designed in theory, but by what can be achieved in practice, always guided by the common good.”
