The importance of Greek shipping to the economy and citizens’ everyday lives was highlighted by Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias at an event hosted by ABN AMRO Bank in Athens.
He stressed that shipping is one of the strongest pillars of the Greek economy, with an international presence and a significant contribution to employment and growth. He also noted that geopolitical tensions and insecurity along maritime routes have a direct impact on the cost of energy, goods and transport.
The minister underlined the need to safeguard maritime navigation and the sector’s competitiveness, stressing that the green transition must be underpinned by realistic planning and practical solutions.
He pointed out that any additional burden on transport costs could be passed on to the real economy and household budgets. Families, jobs, incomes and the prospects of young people in Greece and Europe, he added, remain at the heart of these concerns.
