The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, rose to its highest in two months on Monday on higher capesize vessel rates.

The main index, which monitors rates for capesize, panamax and supramax shipping vessels, edged 4 points higher, or 0.3%, to 1,422 – its highest since April 4.

The capesize index was up 23 points, or 1%, at 2,300 its highest level since April 3.

Average daily earnings for capesize vessels, which typically transport 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, added $186 to $19,071.

On Sunday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said President Donald Trump would soon speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping to iron out a dispute over critical minerals.

The panamax index was down 12 points, or 1%, at 1,107.

Average daily earnings for panamax vessels, which usually carry 60,000-70,000 tons of coal or grain, receded by $105 to $9,967.

Among smaller vessels, the supramax index was unchanged at 951 points.
