Hanwha Ocean Co., the shipbuilding arm of South Korea’s chemical-to-defense conglomerate Hanwha Group, said Friday it has secured a 1.07 trillion-won (US$729.8 million) order to build four container ships from HMM, South Korea’s top shipping company.

The four container vessels are scheduled to be delivered to HMM by February 2029, the company said in a regulatory filing.

The contract follows HMM’s recent large-scale orders, including combined 2.1 trillion-won deals for eight container vessels from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, as part of the shipper’s broader strategy to expand its fleet of eco-friendly vessels.

With the latest deal, Hanwha Ocean has won $7.7 billion worth of vessel orders so far this year.
