MISC Group has launched Yayasan Maritim, Malaysia’s first dedicated maritime-focused foundation, to advance the Group’s long-term nation-building efforts and contribute towards a resilient, inclusive and sustainable maritime future for Malaysia.

The foundation was launched by Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Bakke Salleh, Chairman of PETRONAS, on 3 September 2026 in Kuala Lumpur in the presence of leaders and representatives from PETRONAS, MISC, the maritime industry, academia, corporate partners and other key stakeholders. Held during Malaysia’s Merdeka week, the launch reflects the nation-building purpose at the heart of Yayasan Maritim and MISC’s longstanding commitment to Malaysia’s progress and maritime development.

For nearly six decades, MISC has been part of Malaysia’s maritime story; delivering energy cargoes that power industries, developing generations of maritime talent and contributing to the growth of Malaysia’s maritime ecosystem.

Yayasan Maritim carries the Group’s long-standing contributions to maritime development under a more focused and structured platform. Anchored on three strategic pillars, Education, Environment and Community, the foundation aims to develop future-ready maritime talent, strengthen marine and environmental resilience, and support the wellbeing and development of maritime and coastal communities.

Datuk Zahid Osman, President & Group Chief Executive Officer of MISC said, “The strength of the maritime industry depends on the relationship between its people, the environment and the communities connected to it. These elements reinforce one another and, when developed together, create a maritime ecosystem that is both resilient and prosperous. Through Yayasan Maritim, MISC will bring these priorities together under a focused platform that develops future maritime talent, safeguards our oceans and creates lasting opportunities for maritime and coastal communities.”

Guided by its vision to shape a sustainable maritime future for the nation, Yayasan Maritim will advance its purpose through three interconnected areas of focus:

EducationEnvironmentCommunity
We believe opportunity begins with access to education. Through maritime education, training and development, Yayasan Maritim seeks to strengthen Malaysia’s maritime talent pipeline, build future-ready capabilities and nurture the professionals, leaders and innovators who will shape the industry’s future. Our oceans connect us, sustain us and are central to our maritime future. Yayasan Maritim is committed to protecting marine ecosystems, strengthening climate resilience and advancing meaningful environmental action through conservation, research, innovation and collaboration. We seek to uplift maritime and coastal communities by strengthening resilience, expanding opportunities and supporting sustainable livelihoods, helping communities thrive and participate meaningfully in Malaysia’s maritime progress.

Yayasan Maritim has already begun translating its purpose into action through the MISC Cadet Sponsorship Programme. On 14 June 2026, a total of 190 cadets were awarded sponsorships covering the Diploma in Nautical Studies, Diploma in Marine Engineering and Diploma in Marine Electro-Technology programmes at Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM). Selected through a rigorous and highly competitive process, these future maritime professionals will be equipped with the knowledge, opportunities and support needed to realise their aspirations and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of Malaysia’s maritime industry.

Together, these priorities reflect MISC’s vision to institutionalise its longstanding nation building commitment and contribute to a maritime future that creates lasting value for Malaysia, its maritime ecosystem and generations to come.
