The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) announced the signing of a five-year Strategic Partnership agreement.

NYK becomes the first Japan-headquartered partner to join GCMD.

GCMD highlighted that NYK was the first shipping company in Japan to independently obtain an approval-in-principle (AiP) for an ammonia bunkering vessel (ABV) from ClassNK and that it is also on track to retrofit Sakigake, an LNG-fuelled tugboat, with an ammonia-fuelled engine.

NYK is also working with partner companies to deliver an oceangoing ammonia-fueled ammonia gas carrier (AFAGC) by 2026 and was one of the partners in an ammonia bunkering safety study carried out by GCMD and DNV.

NYK was also involved in a pilot biofuel demonstration aboard the LPG carrier Lycaste Peace which was part of a project to establish an assurance framework for the supply chain of sustainable biofuels led by GCMD.
