Angelos Karakostas, Deputy CEO of the Piraeus Port Authority, referred to the strategic role of ports — and particularly Piraeus — in the new geo-economic environment during his address at the first panel of Naftemporiki’s 10th Shipping Conference.

Karakostas emphasized that ports are becoming increasingly important in a period of restructuring in supply chains and global trade.

As he noted, the Piraeus Port Authority has placed particular emphasis on investments and infrastructure upgrades  over the past ten years, with the aim of strengthening Piraeus’ international position.

“Through investments and effective cooperation, we have elevated Piraeus to the first position in the Mediterranean in all sectors,” he stated.

New investments in cruise shipping

He made particular reference to the development of the cruise sector, emphasizing that a major investment is underway for two new piers, equipped with modern infrastructure and technological means.

As he said, these interventions further strengthen the potential of Piraeus as a leading cruise hub in the Mediterranean.

Focus on green development and AI

The Deputy CEO of the Piraeus Port Authority also stressed that the organization is systematically investing in green development as well as in the digital transformation of the port. In this context, he noted that particular emphasis is being placed on upgrading IT infrastructure, with a focus on artificial intelligence applications.

We are taking the Piraeus port to the next level,” he concluded.
