HD Hyundai said Thursday its shipbuilding unit HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. has been selected as a preferred supplier for a next-generation nuclear reactor project led by U.S. small modular reactor (SMR) developer TerraPower.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed a framework agreement with TerraPower to manufacture and supply key reactor equipment for a sodium-cooled fast reactor, according to HD Hyundai.
The sodium-cooled fast reactor is designed to improve sustainability and cost competitiveness compared with conventional Generation III reactors.
HD Hyundai has been stepping up efforts to develop nuclear-powered vessels in partnership with TerraPower for potential applications in the shipbuilding sector.
