Aegean Shipping Management, in collaboration with Danaos Management Consultants, is developing digital technology by leveraging artificial intelligence tools. The shipping company, owned by George Melissanidis, has implemented the AI-powered Manuals Assistant system, which reduces the administrative workload for both seafarers and shore-based personnel.
Manuals Assistant, developed as part of the DANAOS AI platform, was designed to provide immediate and easy access to critical information that was previously dispersed across complex technical documents and extensive manuals. The value of such a product is substantial: it enables faster retrieval of critical information, enhances response accuracy, and supports more immediate and reliable decision-making both onboard and ashore.
Enhancing Administrative Efficiency
Leveraging the advantages of AI technology, the company is investing in tools designed to reduce the administrative burden on seafarers, allowing them to dedicate more time to their actual maritime duties. “We firmly believe that AI cannot replace seamanship and the human factor,” Aegean Shipping Management noted, but it can contribute to the more efficient performance of the seafarers’ duties by mitigating bureaucratic delays.
Measurements demonstrate that using the system significantly reduces the time required to retrieve regulatory information (regulations, user manuals, etc.) by more than 50%, enabling seafarers and shore-based personnel to focus on more substantial tasks.
The tool was developed through the strategic partnership between Aegean Shipping Management and Danaos Management Consultants, combining over 30 years of experience in managing ocean-going vessels (tankers and dry bulk carriers) with the expertise of a leading maritime software development organization.
Aegean Shipping is constantly seeking innovative technological tools to enhance the efficiency of its fleet management and monitoring, engaging in partnerships with leading companies. The system was initially developed and deployed by Aegean Shipping and is expected to be made available on the market by Danaos.
A critical priority
For Aegean Shipping Management, technology delivers real value when it serves critical priorities of shipping operations. According to the company, the contribution of the tool is clear: it enhances audit readiness, further supports safety, compliance, and quality, and substantially reduces the time required to search for and utilize critical information.
The ability to promptly identify technological opportunities that can be translated into competitive advantage—and to integrate them in a targeted, measurable, and meaningful way—is a strategic priority for Aegean. This is not merely about developing another digital tool. It represents a strategic partnership that demonstrates how maritime expertise and digital innovation can be combined to address real operational needs, delivering tangible and immediate benefits.
