Lomar announces the rebranding of its product and chemical tanker business to ‘CB Tankers’, replacing the ‘Carl Büttner’ name.
This development follows Lomar’s acquisition of the Bremen-based Carl Büttner Holding GmbH & Co. KG and Carl Büttner Group of companies, in 2022, and the subsequent integration of the 168-year-old shipowning and management company into its existing group operations and structure. The group includes the CB Maritime crewing agency, which provides seafarers for its product and chemical tanker fleet of vessels.
Nicholas Georgiou, CEO of Lomar Shipping said: “The Carl Büttner family name has been synonymous with technical management expertise and a strong maritime legacy. The ‘Carl Büttner’ name will return to the family who contributed so much to establish its presence in this specialist segment of shipping.”
Lomar entered into preliminary discussions with the Carl Büttner Group in Q4 2021 and completed regulatory approvals for the $160 million transaction in October 2022. Established in 1856, the Carl Büttner business had been owned and managed by five generations of the Büttner family.
Mr Georgiou added: “The acquisition of Carl Büttner brought together companies with a shared ethos and family values, as highlighted by our joint commitment to the Achim Boehme Scholarship. We have since integrated CB Tankers into our Lomar group and look forward to continuing to build on this brand and business moving forward.”
When Lomar acquired the Carl Büttner Group of companies, the Carl Büttner Foundation generously agreed to provide additional funding to the Achim Boehme Scholarship programme, which honours the life and memory of former Lomar CEO Achim Boehme. He passed away aged 56 in 2020, following a courageous battle with cancer. The scholarship supports the next generation of seafarers and shipping professionals studying at Hochschule Bremen – City University of Applied Sciences.
CB Tankers is managed by joint Managing Directors Lars Bremer and Christian Mackenthun, the latter of whom succeeded his father Thorsten Mackenthun, the long-time Managing Director of the Carl Büttner Group of companies.
